BGT took over operations of Berth 19 in 2016. This berth is capable of handling multipurpose vessels including containers and general cargo. Examples of project cargo include steel pipes, land rigs and various oil well equipment that are typically used in the exploration, development and production phases of the onshore oil fields.
Since the takeover of the berth by BGT, cargo handling efficiency has improved with less port stay time needed to unload the vessel. While berth 19 is not a new investment, BGT has rehabilitated and reorganised the assets and added the specialised equipment to fully support the oil and gas sector giving O&G sector a taste of the unique BGT Customer Experience.
These efforts are now paying off and the numbers speak for themselves. In 2017, 47 vessels called at berth 19, while this year already the same number of vessels have handled by the end of May. Similarly, the cargo handled at berth 19 until May 2018 has increased by over 300% compared to 2017, displaying customer’s growing confidence in BGT’s ability to handle oil & gas/project related cargo.
BGT is supporting business for various oil and gas companies including ExxonMobil, Southern Refinery Company, PetroChina, ENI, Halliburton, CNOOC, Missan Oil Co., and Shell. Recently BGT successfully received transformers for General Electric. Each piece weighed around 139 tons making this cargo the heaviest piece ever transited through BGT storage area. This project demonstrated the capability of BGT team to handle complex cargo.
