Engineers at Basra Gateway Terminal (BGT) stepped up to the challenge of commissioning new port equipment as COVID-19 restrictions prevented Kalmar engineers from travelling to Iraq.
BGT ordered three empty container handlers from Kalmar in response to the growing demand and steady volume increase after the opening of two new berths last year. The equipment were delivered last May, but instead of waiting for the travel restrictions to be lifted, BGT’s team of engineers proceeded with the commissioning to get the empty container handlers up and running as scheduled.
It took the team half the time to assemble the equipment, which allowed the Company to save on the cost of using extra personnel and resources. More importantly, the task highlighted the team’s skills and flexibility in solving problems. These values will prove useful especially during these unprecedented times where the world continues to change.
